Not sure if you have notice, I have cut down my blog post and having a more
relaxing schedule, ahhhh........ still not in the mood for crafting, and I do have a problem that need some suggestions from you out there .......
Let's start with this little guy......
cute huh? not until he starts eating our tomatoes and radishes in the garden
ok, we get the gardener to build a big cage over the tomatoes, it looks ugly but then at least we have some tomatoes left for ourself...
a week ago, my gardener planted these beautiful flowers in the pot for us...
less than a week, this is how it looks right now
the ground squirrels had definitely found a new canteen for lunch
just look at the crime scene evidence...
and then I thought, maybe this guy could be the culprit....
I saw him at our backyard that day.....
OR.........
.................
?????????????
......
??????
.................
????????
NO, no, it cannot be this guy I saw on my way home the other night....
I don't think he is a vegetarian....
hmmmmm.....
????????
so we start to search for a solution
type: "I hate ground squirrels"click!!!
should be have a scarecrow in our South Western theme backyard?
or should we buy a .........
dress up like the farmer and his wife.....
sit on our deck every morning...
and wait for these little critters to show up...
they not only eating our vegetables AND flowers, they build tunnels under our deck too
and according to our research, they could be quite destructive to the property
***
some said you shoot a few and then they will disappear for a while, I wonder how do they educate their follows and warn them about the farmer, his wife and the bibi gun?
I thought of a dog...
(don't suggest a cat, I am a Ailurophobia)
but who wants to take care of babies now that ours are all grown up
(the baby of the family is leaving home for college this fall)
***
my cleaning lady suggested clear bottles filled with water.....
that seems to be the best option for me as "nobody" is going to get hurt...
***
sad to say it doesn't work, they knock down the bottles and continue to chew on my poor flowers
***
since the water bottle method is all about "reflections"
you think this would work?
after all, it did says "Ninga Mirror" on the web....
(a bit of information regarding the pagua mirror for my friend who wants to know more about feng shui and the mirror - click HERE)
***
Well, murder PLAN A is not going to work out as OshKosh B'Gosh no longer carry the farmer's overall in adult sizes....
So we continue to search even more seriously....
***
Murder PLAN B - The Rat Trap
urgh.... but who wants to take care of bloody dead body at the crime scene every morning... YIKES!
and after reading all the suggestions here....
we might start building the ground squirrels swimming pool tomorrow
but Murder PLAN C had to carry out behind these innocent people.....
as they yell "Murderer" when I cook a Lobster at home....
***
oh well, we will see how it goes, I might still chicken out tomorrow, it is really scary to see dead body floating in the swimming pool, but what else can I do???
I hope they have mercy on my poor vegetables and flowers, other wise, we should declare WAR with these pesky little critters!!!!!!!!
Oh my gosh THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the biggest laugh I've had in a while. :-) I know this is a serious problem to you and your poor garden but you have put such a hilarious spin to your tale I couldn't help but laugh. Good luck on finding the perfect plan. LOLLLLLLLL Hugs!
ReplyDeleteOHH my....what are you gonna do? We have squirrels everywhere and i have not seen them hurt anything..but drive our lab nuts...he wants to chase them. I hope you figure something out. cherry
ReplyDeletethis was a hiliarious post! I know it's not cool to laugh about critters eating your plants and veggies but your write up had me in stitches! We had a groundhog that ate the entire flower down to the stem. It was not pleasant. It looked someone took a weed whacker to the plant. He was relocated curiousity of a neighbor and not harmed. Hope the critter relocates for you. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh no!!! This is HORRIBLE! :( I didn't realize those cute little critters were so destructive :( I am so sorry you are going through this :(
ReplyDeleteyou make me smiling! But I know from the cousin in Philly about teh problems with Squirrles!I dont like them too! poor you, poor flowers

ReplyDeleteWe have loads of squirrels here but none eat the flowers or veg ... rabbits ... now they love flowers and veg ... I have hanging bird nuts in my garden ... that's what the squirrels love ... love your funny post ... can't help you though ... could never be an accomplice to murder ... I'm with your girls on this one ... sorry! Hope you find the solution
ReplyDeleteSo sorry your garden is under attack. If I could I would lend you my cat Bun Bun who can definitely 'solve' that problem for you. Hope your plan goes well.

Kirsty, I laughed at you funny post. Now you know how I felt last spring when something ate all my tomatoes. However, I did learn a few things. I finally got rid of all the mice outside by putting D-con in the attic and in secure from cats places in the yard, I also started feeding the squirrels so that they did not want tomatoes and putting out plenty of water as well. I do know that Lowe's and probably other stores will carry some stuff you can spread out to deter animals from eating in your garden, it is just not safe for pets. Have you considered plants that are pest tolerant, I know they have those. Good luck with your adventure. My dad had pecan trees and a million squirrels, he chose to trap them and drown them, but there were always more! I don't think chipmunks eat flowers, so that will be the rabbit, squirrels love tomatoes, but so do field mice. Good luck, get advice from your local home improvement store! and have a wonderful Sunday!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Great post! Your poor flowers! I say do what you need to do to get rid of the squirrels. But how to do it, yeah... I have nothing.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your troubles ..that would be so frustrating! I had to chuckle at you approach to this post...good luck! !
ReplyDeleteSorry about your critters... can't help you with that... we got a dog to handle that problem for us. You might try the Creative Jump Start Summit 2012 for your mojo problem, though... and it's FREE!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
I got a chuckle out of some of your photos and how you told the story.. those critters are very elusive. Gardening is always interesting. I battle squirrels, rabbits, and moles. They can be very challenging. Good luck on your methods.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this!! What a fun post my friend.. And as I was reading I was thinking Maybe just Maybe my cats could help.. I will ask them and see what they say.. You know they are pretty old. They might not be able to handle a Ground squirrel..

OMGosh, Kirsty, you are cracking me up! I can SO relate to this post. Those darn squirrels get into everything. And I mean EVERYTHING! The only way I've learned to deal with them is to stop planting anything........;(
ReplyDeleteLOL Love these photos Kirsty. I love tomatoes too. :)
ReplyDeletehilarious! i have only had a problem with squirrels in my bird feeder, but i got a squirrel-proof birdfeeder and my problem was solved. but my sister bought a book for me called "Outwitting Squirrels" by Bill Adler Jr. (second edition!) which is an educational and hilarious read. maybe you'll find something useful in there! good luck!
ReplyDeleteAt first I laughed about your post; so funny. But I know how i tfeels. All the effort, time, attention and money gone in the blink of an eye due to these so called cuties. It's almost depressing to see your flowers disappear and all there is left are some pieces....
ReplyDeletePoor you.....Let's hope the water bottles will do the trick!
Way too cute, I totally fancy squirrels and rabbits! Thanks for another lovely post Kirsty!
